Field guide · Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

ExploreMinca

Waterfalls, mountain coffee, birds that live nowhere else and a village of a few streets — all a walk or a mototaxi ride from the house.

Minca sits in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, about 650 m above sea level and under an hour of hairpin bends from Santa Marta. Cooler than the coast, and a great deal greener.

To be clear: Casa Bosco doesn’t sell or run tours. This guide is here so you can plan your own way — and spend your money with the people of Minca.

Mountains and trees seen from the house on a clear morning; the corner of the pool peeks in at the bottom right.

An unhurried planner

Your Minca, your pace

Pick how you want your days to feel and how many you have. You’ll get a sketch of a plan with places from this guide and good time back at the house.

How it’s built: no AI, no dice. It takes the places in this guide that match your pace, gentlest first (toughest first for adventure); every day starts at the house and ends on the terrace, outings of 6 hours or more fill the whole day, and no place repeats.

Your Minca, your pace

Practical guide

Good to know before you head up

Six field notes on getting here, getting around and treating the Sierra well. Where sources disagree, you get both versions.

Getting here

Every road to Minca runs through Santa Marta. From there it is under an hour of bends uphill.

  • Shared minibus (colectivo): they leave Santa Marta from Carrera 9, between Calles 10 and 11, next to the Cootransminca office, and drop you at the village stop, where you also catch the ride back (Hostelworld).
  • Frequency and fare reported by Visit my Colombia (May 2025): departures every 30 min, 7 am to 6 pm, about 50 minutes, COP 10,000 per person. Double-check — these change.
  • By car: sources quote 25 to 50 minutes depending on traffic and vehicle. Minca is roughly 14–21 km from Santa Marta, depending on who you ask.
  • From Simón Bolívar airport (about 28 km): there is no direct public transport. Either head into central Santa Marta for the colectivo, or take a taxi straight up (Visit my Colombia reports about COP 100,000 in 2025).
  • Doing a day trip? The last colectivos back leave in the late afternoon.

Getting around

Around here you walk or ride a mototaxi. Everything else is mud, bends and patience.

  • The village itself is walkable — it is only a few streets.
  • For Marinka, La Victoria or Los Pinos, mototaxis are the default; they wait at the plaza. Agree the fare before you set off.
  • There is no bus or jeep network into the hills, and many roads are unpaved: a regular car will not make it (Visit my Colombia).
  • In the rainy season the upper road turns into a stream of water and mud; only motorbikes and 4×4s get through (Sula).
  • At night, walk with a torch and keep to the edge of the road. For far-off waterfalls or farms, one local guide recommends going with a certified guide, especially after dark.

Weather

At around 650 m, Minca is cooler than the coast. Bring a layer — you will notice it at night.

  • Altitude: about 650 m above sea level (Visit my Colombia, Sula); Hostelworld says 660 m, other sources 600–700 m.
  • Temperature: averages of roughly 18 °C at night and 28 °C by day (Visit my Colombia). It is humid year-round.
  • Dry season: December to March, with clearer skies and easier trails.
  • Rains: sources disagree on exact months (May–November peaking in May and October, says one; April–May and October–December, says another). Showers are often short and tend to come late in the day.
  • When it rains, stone paths get slick and rivers rise and run muddy: the day after a downpour is not the day to swim under waterfalls.

What to pack

Less beach, more mountain: think mud, water and cool early starts.

  • Shoes with real grip (wet rocks are unforgiving) plus water sandals.
  • A light rain jacket and a warm layer for the evening.
  • Swimsuit and a quick-dry towel.
  • Insect repellent and a head torch.
  • Binoculars if you are into birds.
  • Cash in small notes.
  • A refillable bottle and a bag for your rubbish.

Travelling responsibly

The Sierra is home to many people and a staggering number of birds. Visit it like you would someone’s home.

  • Rubbish: whatever goes up comes back down with you. Out here, the river carries it to the sea.
  • Water: no soap, shampoo or sunscreen in rivers and pools. The Río Gaira, together with the Manzanares, feeds Santa Marta’s water supply.
  • Wildlife: look, don’t touch or feed; skip the playback and keep away from nests. The Sierra has 36 endemic bird species, several of them threatened.
  • Private farms: many trails, falls and viewpoints are on private land. Pay whatever fee the owners ask, stay on the path and close the gates.
  • Indigenous territory: the Sierra is the ancestral land of the Kogui, Arhuaco, Wiwa and Kankuamo peoples, with sacred sites throughout (Visit my Colombia notes the Oído del Mundo falls are sacred to the Kogui). Ask before photographing people and respect places closed to visitors.
  • Spend locally: guides, mototaxi drivers, cafés, farms and village craftspeople. That is how the forest stays worth more standing.

Money: cash and cards

Cash rules in Minca. Arrive with small notes and don’t count on finding an ATM.

  • Carry cash for mototaxis and waterfall or farm entry fees: travel guides recommend small notes.
  • We could not confirm from an independent source whether Minca has an ATM, or how reliable it is. Withdraw what you need in Santa Marta before heading up.
  • Planning to pay by card at a restaurant, farm or agency? Ask first — we found no source confirming which businesses accept them.
  • At Casa Bosco: Booking.com lists cash; Hostelworld lists cash, credit or debit on arrival. The listings disagree, so please confirm with the house.

Then, back home

After the mud, the pool

Come back on tired legs to an outdoor pool with a mountain view, a hammock on the terrace and the lights coming on as the sun drops. Private rooms and dorms 0.32 km from the centre of Minca.

A white woven hammock hanging on the terrace, with afternoon light and plants behind.
