Getting there
- Walks usually start in Minca or at the farm you choose; your guide will set the meeting point.
- For the high-altitude species you need to go up towards San Lorenzo/El Dorado by 4×4 on an unpaved road.
Explore Minca
The Sierra Nevada is one of the world’s great hubs of endemic birds, and Minca is one of its front doors.
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a mountain range cut off from the Andes, and the birds show it. According to Colombia Travel, 635 species have been recorded there — about 35% of Colombia’s birds — including 36 found nowhere else on Earth.
The classic birders’ route climbs from Santa Marta to Minca and on towards San Lorenzo, where most endemics turn up: Santa Marta Parakeet, Santa Marta Brushfinch, Yellow-crowned Whitestart, Santa Marta Mountain-Tanager and more. Around Minca itself, Sula counts some 300 resident and migratory species.
What to expect: dawn starts, slow walks on quiet tracks off the main road, hummingbirds galore and a stiff neck from looking up. The high-altitude specialities need a trip up to the Cuchilla de San Lorenzo and ProAves’ El Dorado reserve — a full-day outing.
A local guide makes all the difference: they know the calls and the spots. Minca has independent guides and agencies, and farms like La Victoria run their own bookable bird walks. Pick one and book it yourself ahead of time.
Casa Bosco doesn’t sell or run this visit: go on your own or with a local guide.
