Explore Minca

What it’s like

A ridge-top viewpoint at around 1,300 m, looking over the coast and the Sierra. For the hardy, Cerro Kennedy is a two-day outing.

Los Pinos is a viewpoint and a cluster of lodges on the ridge at roughly 1,300 m. It is one of Minca’s best sunrise and sunset spots: on clear mornings you see the coast and, on rare days, the snow peaks.

Let’s be honest: from the village (650 m) that is about 650 m of climbing. On foot, guides quote 3 to 4 hours one way; by mototaxi, 25 to 40 minutes. There are two routes — the easier main road or a steeper trail. A popular one-day loop (about 11 km, per Sula) goes via La Victoria, up to Los Pinos and down to Marinka.

Cerro Kennedy is a different league: a long climb high into the Sierra that most people split over two days, sleeping on the way to catch sunrise at the top. Sources disagree on the summit height (2,600 to 3,100 m) and distance (12 km from Tienda La Y; 25 km round trip from Minca), but all agree it is moderate to hard.

For Kennedy you start before dawn, need solid fitness and must sort transport, a bed and the way back in advance. One guide recommends going with a local guide; another says it can be done solo with good planning. We’d take the guide.

Casa Bosco doesn’t sell or run this visit: go on your own or with a local guide.

Before you go

Getting there

  1. On foot from Minca via the main road (easier) or the steep trail.
  2. By mototaxi to Los Pinos; the road is unpaved and heavy going after rain.
  3. For Kennedy: mototaxi to Tienda La Y, then on foot, with a bed booked on the way.

What to bring

  • Plenty of water and snacks
  • Rain shell and a warm layer
  • Head torch
  • Hiking shoes
  • Cash

Field tips

  • For sunrise, sleep up there — several lodges make that possible.
  • Ride up, walk down: your knees will grumble, your wallet won’t.
  • Mornings are clearer; clouds roll in by afternoon.

Heads-up

  • In the wet season the road turns to mud with water running down it.
  • Kennedy is demanding — do not improvise it or start late.

Travel lightly

  • Many trails cross private farms: ask permission, pay any fee the owners ask and close the gates behind you.
